Edward H. "Eddie" Lyons, 85, of Clemmons, NC passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was
born in Winston-Salem on May 12, 1923 to the late James and Celeste Bost Lyons.

Eddie was a lifelong member of Christ Moravian Church. During his life, Eddie, a 32nd degree Mason, was also a member of the Shrine & the Elks, and loved to fish and play golf.

Eddie had a lifetime career with Major League Baseball. He signed a contract out of RJ Reynolds High School when he was 17 with the former Washington Senators. His baseball career was interrupted when he joined the U. S. Navy during WWII.

After the war, Eddie played and managed for the Senators, Boston Red Sox, and the St. Louis Cardinals organizations. Later, he became a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals for 22 years which included two World Series Championships. In 1976, Eddie became the third base coach for the Minnesota Twins.

After a leg injury ended his coaching, he then began advance scouting the Major League Teams, finishing his career with the Chicago Cubs in 1995. Eddie was honored to be inducted into the Winston-Salem Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.

He was preceeded in death by his wife of 55 years, Donna Sapp Lyons, his brothers, Fuzzy, Jack, and Bobby Lyons, and his sister Eloise Truelove.

He is survived by his children Rita Lyons Disher (Rick), Mickey Lyons (Jenny), and Robbyn Lyons (Brooks), 3 grandsons, Matthew (Shannon), Scott (Melinda) and Andrew (Kathi); 3 great-grandsons; 3 great-granddaughters and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem on January 27, 2009 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at Christ Moravian Church at 11a.m. on January 28, 2009 by Dr. Neil Routh with burial following at God' s Acre in Old Salem. The family would like to extend special thanks to Shannon and Antwan for their help in caring for Eddie during his declining health.
