ZWIREK Louis C., 91, Retired Nutley High School Principal and Football Coach, of Clifton, formerly of Nutley for over 50 years, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Valley Hospital, Ridgewood.

The funeral will be conducted from the Biondi Funeral Home of Nutley, on Saturday, March 19 at 8:45 AM.

The funeral mass will be at St. Mary's Church, Nutley, at 10 AM, with Military Honors.

The entombment will be at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington.

Visitation will be on Friday, March 18 from 3-7 PM, with a service by the Nutley Old Guard at 4 P.M.

Mr. Zwirek was born and raised in Hanover Township, PA. He attended East Stroudsburg University, lettered in three sports, and graduated in 1942 with a B.S. in education. He went on to play professional baseball in the Boston Braves farm system before an injury curtailed his career. He then began his coaching and teaching career in Curwensville, PA, before entering the Navy as a Lieutenant Supply Officer in 1944, where he served in the Pacific and the Philippines. He went on to earn an M.A. of Education from Penn State University and completed additional work at both Harvard and Seton Hall Universities.

Mr. Zwirek was recruited to teach and coach at Nutley High School in 1953. He spent nearly 30 years as a teacher of math and history, department head, track coach, and line coach of the football team, before becoming Administrative Assistant, then Vice Principal and ultimately retiring as NHS Principal in 1982. In addition to other honors, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Nutley Jaycees in 1979, and was named Essex County Administrator of the Year in 1980.

Mr. Zwirek was also a former member of the Nutley Elks, and the Nutley Rotary Club, as well as a current member of Knights of Columbus St. Mary's Council #2346, VFW Post 493, Nutley Old Guard, Nutley Republican Club, and Essex County Retired Educators.

Mr. Zwirek is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Jane (nee Corazza) Zwirek; his loving daughters Judith Rozema and her husband Barry, Jill Scirocco and her husband Joseph; his brother John Zwirek; his sisters Theodora Gorde and Josephine Barnes; his dearly loved grandchildren Barry Jr. and Mark Rozema, Amanda Francioni, Stephanie Scirocco and Lieutenant JG NSW Michael Scirocco; also his precious great-grandchildren Justin, Jessica and Brianna. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Zwirek is predeceased by his sisters Ann Zavacki, Ceil Stretanski, and his brother Edmund Zwirek.
