SHELBY - Mr. John Dewill "Jay" Wright, 73, of 336 Grice Street, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at White Oak Manor.

He was born in Cleveland County, on May 30, 1935, to the late Theodore and Addie Surratt Wright.

He retired from Esther Mill after 21 years of service and was formerly employed by Duke Power.

Jay played professional baseball in the White Sox organization.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Edna Jennings Wright; two sisters, Ollie Merriweather and Carolyn Wright, both of Shelby; one brother, Wray Wright of Shelby; two special nieces that he took care of in their youth, Kyaisa and Mya London; six sisters-in-law, Pauline Wright, Shelly Wright, Christine Wright, Ruth Walker, Gail Eaves (Tommy) and Barbara Jennings; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral: Thursday, Feb. 26, 1 p.m., Saint Peter Baptist Church, Grover

Visitation: The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service, at the church.
Burial: Sunset Cemetery
