NORTH MYRTLE BEACH | Kenneth Lanier Wood went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2007.

He was born in 1924 in Lincolnton, North Carolina to Oscar B. and Mary M. Wingate Wood. He was one of their nine children. He grew up in Homestead, N.C. and attended Pawcreek High and Central High School in Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Wood was a professional baseball player with the St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Sox and Washington Senators. After his baseball career, he was employed by Prudential Insurance Company for 28 years and then retired with his wife to North Myrtle Beach.

He was a member of First Presbyterian and Mulberry Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, N.C., and Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church of North Myrtle Beach, where he served on the Activities Committee.

Mr. Wood was a member of Pawcreek American Legion Post for over 50 years and he also served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946 during World War II.

He was a loving husband, father and granddaddy, and a friend to his family and everyone he met. He loved to fish and hunt.

Mr. Wood is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alberta ''Bert'' Wood; a son, Kenneth L. Wood Jr. of Columbia; two daughters, Betsy Evans of Midland, N.C. and Suzanne Wood Hudson of York; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Roberts.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, William and James Wood; and sisters, Bessie Edwards, Laura McClure and Helen Popwell.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2007 at Lee Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.
