Thomas E. Wesley, 51,
of Huntsville passed away Monday at Huntsville Hospital.
Thomas was very active in all sports, but baseball was his first love.
He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds and played several years for the
Reds minor league in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
His pursuit of professional baseball ended and he stayed in baseball by
becoming a baseball coach at Snead State, Stillman, and Alabama A&M
University, where he stayed for 16 years. His last place of employment
was as a recreation assistant at the North Alabama Regional Hospital in
Decatur.
He was a certified national federation basketball official.
Working with kids, refereeing basketball games, playing softball, and
just plain old enjoying life was what gave him joy.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving mother, Dora Wesley of Talladega;
four brothers, Ocie Jr. and wife Ernestine of Inglewood, Calif., Benjamin
and wife Gwendolyn and Cleopha, all of St. Louis, and Marvin of Huntsville;
sister, Vera Hendrix of Talladega; nine nieces and nephews; and many other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Chapel Missionary
Baptist Church with Dr. O. Wendell Davis officiating. Interment will be
in Kaffee Cemetery, West Blocton.
Mr. Wesley will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time. Royal Funeral
Home is in charge of the arrangements.
