"Wedge" "Lefty" Gates: Passed away on May 6, 2010, at age 89.

Predeceased by his parents, John and Anna Wargo; daughter, Ailene Wargo and siblings Peter, John, Nicholas, Mary, Joseph and Anastasia Wargo.

Survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jane (Christoff) Wargo; daughter, Ann "Ancha" (Joseph) Best; grandchildren, Jessica and Gregory Best; nieces and nephews, Carol (Thom) Hickey, Nicholas (Joann) Wargo, Sonya and Sandy Wargo, Peter (Valerie) Wargo, Michael Wargo and Donna Booth; several grand nieces and grand nephews.

In 1943, Paul played for the Rochester Red Wings as a left-handed pitcher and outfielder. Paul served in World War II under General George S. Patton from 1944-45.

While on tour in Europe with 65th Division, Paul played baseball with a variety of major league players also serving the war effort; which provided entertainment for the troops. He continued his career with the Red Wings in 1946.

At the completion of his baseball career, he was employed with the Bricklayer's Union NY #11 until his retirement in 1982. Paul and his wife Jane are founding members of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Rochester, NY.

Friends may call Sunday (May 9th) from 7-9pm at the funeral home of ALVAH HALLORAN & SON, 2125 Chili Ave. Funeral Services will be Monday, 12pm at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 855 S. Goodman St.
