Leonard J. Visgaitis Sr., 91, of 26 S. Emerick St., Shenandoah, passed away Monday at Shenandoah Senior Living Community.

Born in Shenandoah, April 25, 1918, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ella Zimmitravich Visgaitis.

Mr. Visgaitis was retired from Purolator Products, Pattersonville. Earlier he worked as a miner in the local coal industry.

Len was a semi-professional baseball player in earlier years having been under contract with the Detroit Tigers Minor League Club.

He was a devout member of St. George's Church, Shenandoah, and the parish choir, Knights of Lithuania Anthracite Council 144 and the Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens.

Len found great joy in singing in various church choirs, woodworking and gardening.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his wife, the former Eleanor Alex, who died Feb. 14, 2005.

Surviving are one son, Leonard J. Visgaitis Jr, and his wife, Judy, of Catawissa; one daughter, Patricia Bubnis, Shenandoah; one grandson, Daniel Bubnis, Wilkes-Barre; one sister, Eleanor, wife of Anthony Brutto, Mahanoy City; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday from Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday in Annunciation BVM Church, Shenandoah. Rev. Msgr. Bernard Flanagan, pastor, will officiate. Committal services will be held in Annunciation BVM Chapel, Shenandoah Heights. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
