WEST SPRINGFIELD - Donald P. Veto died Thursday, November 6th, 2008, surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband of 50 years to wife, Lois (Surprenant) Veto.

A devoted father of son, Donald R. of California, daughters, Lisa Costello and her husband Dennis of Florida, Lori Tracy and her husband James of North Carolina and an adoring grandfather to Cameron, Carly, Samantha, Zachary and Jillian. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Chamberland and nephews David and Alan Chamberland.

He was born in Willimansett to the late Edward and Inez Veto. Don served as Alderman in Chicopee and was a lifelong resident the Western MA area.

He is a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and former member of the American Legion, VFW, Chicopee Elks and Kiwanis. In his younger years he was well known as a former professional baseball player having been part of the Can-Am League as a member of the NY Giants organization.

Don began his career as a salesman with The Minute Maid Corp. and then continued his work in the food industry by joining Bruce and Fitzgerald, Inc. Don later formed his own brokerage company which eventually evolved into Toomey-Fitzgerald-Delong-Veto, Inc.

During his working years he was an active member in the Connecticut Food Broker's Association. Don was an avid golfer who spent many years as a member of Wyckoff Country Club and in most recent years with The Springfield Country Club where he served as president from 1989-1991.

His good nature and love for life touched so many individuals throughout his lifetime and he will be dearly missed by many very special friends and his loving family.

The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Tuesday at 10:00am with Liturgy in St. Ann's Church at 11:00am.

The burial will take place in the Massachusetts's Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Visiting hours will be held Monday from 4:00 - 7:00pm.
