LEBANON, Va. Ben F. Valley, 74, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012, in the Russell County Medical Center. Born July 16, 1937, in Mattie Williams Hospital in Richlands, Va., he was a son of the late Leon and Jeanette Whited Valley.

Ben was a 1955 graduate of Lebanon High School, and a 1961 graduate of East Tennessee State University. He was a retired counselor for the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services, and was a member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church.

Ben was an outstanding athlete in three sports. He played six years in minor league baseball for the New York Giants organization. He still holds the Virginia High School League record for the most points scored by a high school freshman in basketball in one season. He was inducted in the V.H.S.L. Hall of Fame in 1992 for sports and coaching. He taught and coached at Cleveland, Va., Stafford and Spotsylvania counties in Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lou Watson and her husband, Tom Watson.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Patty Valley; two daughters, Jennifer Sexton and husband, Larry, Lebanon, and Lisa Smith Stevens and husband, Billy, Bristol, Va.; one son, Benjamin F. Valley Jr., Chicago; five grandchildren, Bryan Sexton, Benjamin Sexton, Morgan Smith Francisco and husband, Trey, Maddie Smith, and Georgia Rose Valley; one sister, Janith Valley, Lebanon; and one brother, L. F. Valley, Lebanon; also several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted 7 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2012, in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with the Rev. Wil Cantrell officiating. The committal service and entombment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday May 29, 2012, in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon.

Those attending are requested to meet at the mausoleum prior to the service. Serving as pallbearers will be Bill Watson, Tom Watson, David Watson, Aaron Valley, Trey Francisco, Ben Sexton and Bryan Sexton.

The family will receive friends 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2012, prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the charity of your choice in Ben's memory.
