Edwin A. Umstead of Fountainville died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at his home.

He was the husband of Jean Ulrich Umstead for 57 years.

Born in Hilltown Township in 1925, he was the son of the late A. Linford and Bertha Althouse Umstead.

During his younger years, Ed played professional baseball for the former Brooklyn Dodgers minor league teams.

Ed was a partner in Umstead Brothers Logging Co., having retired in 1985.

He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Dublin, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, served on the Consistory and as financial secretary.

In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by two daughters, Gail Gorgol and her husband, John, of New Hope and Mary Ann Mackell and her husband, Dr. Thomas E., of Gwynedd Valley; one son, Edwin U. Umstead and his wife, Monica, of Perkasie; and nine grandchildren, Laura Gorgol Churns, Rebecca Gorgol, Emily, Jean, Allison and Thomas Mackell, and Elizabeth, Christopher and Rachel Umstead. He is also survived by his sister, Edith Fretz.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Warren and Robert Umstead; and sister, Ruth Umstead Rose.
