Philip Francis Truax, a longtime resident of Merced County for 65 years passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, April 1st of 2010 in Merced, California at the age of 84. He was born on May 18th of 1925 in Cadillac, Michigan to the late Floyd E. and Blanche (Long) Truax.

Phil attended Flushing High School in Michigan and graduated in 1944. He then served his Country by enlisting in the US Navy where he was assigned to the Naval Hospital which is now the Ahwanee Hotel, while stationed there he met the love of his life Evelyn, while she worked for the Red Cross.

After completing his Navy service, Phil went on to a short baseball career in Kentucky where he played for the Chicago White Sox Semi-Pro League, he then married Evelyn and moved to Merced.

Phil worked for Miles & Sons and then went into the Sporting Goods and Liquor Business with Lou Pebellier (Phil & Lou's Sporting Goods) and was an avid snow skier. He played fast pitch baseball with Miles & Sons Traveling Team. He then owned and operated the Giant Frosty with his family.

Phil retired in 1985 and during this time he spent most of his time golfing and being the chauffer for his grandchildren.

Phil leaves many stories and fond memories for all his family.

Phil is survived by his children Kathy (Paul) Slater of Ballico, Michele (Joe) Corvello of Merced, Robert Truax of Sebastopol, John Truax of Sunnyvale and Tom Truax of Merced. Also surviving are his six grandchildren Katie Slater, Ryan Corvello, Daniel Corvello, Jessica Truax, Jeff Truax and Johnny Truax. Phil also leaves behind his sister Geri (Jim) Kelush of Michigan and his brother Chuck (Kay) Truax of Merced and also many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the choice of the donor.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 10th, 2010 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and a private burial at Calvary Cemetery.
