Harold was born Aug. 14, 1921, in Idaho Falls. He was the seventh of 11 children born to John Thomas Tobin and Lillian Ross Tobin. He grew up near Highland Ballpark and loved the game of baseball. His father passed away at an early age, requiring him to leave school to help support the family.
He played professional baseball briefly before being called to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Staff Sergeant in the 88th Infantry Division fighting in Italy.
After coming home, he met and married Cleopa Baxter in 1946. They enjoyed 45 years together, raising five children until her death in 1991.
He later met and married Betty Boyd in August 2000.
Dad enjoyed a variety of activities such as fishing, camping, baseball, softball, bowling and gardening, and in later years, he was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Idaho Falls Seniors Golf Association and served as president for 11 years. He shot three holes-in-one.
Harold was a partner in Tobin Dry Cleaners for 14 years, delivering dry cleaning all over southeastern Idaho, gaining many lifelong friends with his humor and fun-loving personality. In 1973, he and his son Hal started Tobin Cleaning and Restoration. After his marriage to Betty, he joined her in her Medical Delivery Business. They enjoyed their time working together.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Diana (Bob) Workman of Sandy, Utah, and Lynda Davis of Boise, Idaho; sons, Hal (Deb) Tobin of Idaho Falls and Brad (Deanne) Tobin of Mesa, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bob and Ross Tobin; sister, Dorothy Mott; stepchildren, Kelley, Michael, Patrick and Kathleen Boyd; and 14 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Bruce Tobin; wife, Cleopa; and brothers and sisters, Gordon, Don, Ed, Quinton, Tom, Ruth and Lillian.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m. at Calvary Chapel, 4250 S. 25th East in Idaho Falls, with Pastor Rick Brown officiating. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th St. in Idaho Falls, and at the church one hour prior to the funeral.
