THOMPSON, Richard N. Sr. "Bama," passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 23, 2011, surrounded by his family. Born July 26, 1926, in Russellville, Ala., to Ernest and Ezra Thompson. Bama enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17. He served with the 5th division 26th Marines. He served in the South Pacific and the occupation of Japan.

After discharge, he played professional baseball until a career ending injury. He continued his love of the sport by coaching boys baseball and American Legion Baseball Post 111 for many years. He was employed by Tampa Electric for 36 years and retired as a Watch Engineer in 1989.

Bama was recently predeceased by his son, Stephen Thompson, July 3, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Guelda; sons, Richard Jr. (Natalie) and Matthew (Annette); grandson, Richard III; daughter-in-law, Donna; brother, Ernest B. Thompson (Katherine) of Fairhope, Ala; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews in Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

Visitation will take place 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. with services beginning at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, December 1, at Garden of Memories Chapel, 4207 E. Lake Ave., Tampa. Interment will follow at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park. The Rev. Jerold Stadel of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will officiate.
