Philip J. Tarpey, Jr. 79, of Springfield died Thursday evening, December
20, 2012 surrounded by his family at Lifecare of Wilbra-ham.
Philip a son of the late Philip J. and Elizabeth (Kennedy) Tarpey was
born in Gardner, Massachusetts on October 30, 1933.
Raised in Gardner he graduated from Gardner High School and in later years
was inducted into the Gardner Athletic Hall of Fame.
Philip received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from
the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where as a pitcher he earned
UMass' first All-America selection in baseball. While at UMass he earned
three letters and was a member of two consecutive NCAA Tournament teams.
He helped UMass in their first advancement to the College World Series
In 1955 he was named MVP of the NCAA Regional, was a member of the NCAA
Regional All-Tournament and was winner of the E. Joseph Thompson Memorial
MVP team trophy. After his graduation from UMass, Philip played Triple
A professional baseball for the Chicago Cubs Farm team.
In 2000, Philip was inducted into the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame. He
received his Juris Doctorate from Western New England College School of
Law. Philip was a Trial Attorney and Managing Partner for 48 years at
Buckley, Richardson, and Gelinas.
A lifelong resident of Springfield he was a communicant of St. Catherine
of Siena Church. Philip was a member of Springfield Country Club, the
Massachusetts and Hampden County Bar Associations, and the University
of Massachusetts Alumni Association. In addition to his parents,
Philip was predeceased by his wife of 43 years Constance Mae (Casey) Tarpey;
and two brothers, John and Robert Tarpey.
Philip is survived by two sons, Michael C. Tarpey and his wife Andrea
of Springfield and Philip J. Tarpey III and his wife Kathryn of Wilbraham;
two daughters, Kathleen T. Breck and her husband Edward of West Springfield
and Kerry A. Tarpey and her husband Derek Kumpulanian of Wilbraham; a
sister Elizabeth Tarpey of Winchendon, MA; ten grandchildren, John "Jack"
and Owen Breck, Casey, Hannah and Bridget Tarpey, James and Matthew Kumpulanian,
Anthony, Sean, and Joshua Tarpey; a sister-in-law, Gloria Tarpey of Gardner;
along with many nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours for Philip will be held on Wednesday, December 26, 2012
from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sampson's Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham
His funeral will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. at
the funeral home followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.
in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1023 Parker Street, Springfield.
Rites of Committal and Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery,
421 Tinkham Road, Springfield.
