Tony E. Tappe, 50, of 1635 South 30th, died at 1:22 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 4, 2012) in Blessing Hospital, Quincy.

Tony was born Nov. 25, 1961, in Quincy, a son of Melvin E. and Wanda L. Tappe. On Oct. 30, 1981, he married Kathy Elbus in Quincy. She survives.

Tony was a 1980 graduate of Quincy Notre Dame. He was a four-year varsity starter in baseball at QND. Tony was an all-state first baseman in 1979, and in 1980 he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs.

Tony joined his father and uncle at Tappe's Sporting Goods in the fall of 1980. He and his brother, Tim, took over the business until it closed in 2003. Since that time, Tony has worked in sales at Ted's Shirt Shack.

Tony was a QND sports fan and followed his sons' sports careers. He especially enjoyed hanging out with his friends and family.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two sons, Andrew (Katie) Tappe of Chicago and Alex Tappe of Quincy; a sister, Terri (Mark) Conner of Austin, Texas; three brothers, Ted (Raina) Tappe, Tim (Diane) Tappe and Marty Tappe, all of Quincy.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Monday at The Crossing with Rev. Roger Selves conducting. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Quincy.

VISITATION: 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
