Richard "Dick" Allen Tait Sr., 78, of Montclair, died on Wednesday, June 2, at his home.

Funeral arrangements are pending from Caggiano Funeral Home, Montclair; 973-744-6667.

Mr. Tait was born in Newark and lived there until he moved to Montclair in 1953, where he remained for the rest of his life.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War where he also played baseball. He later played Triple A baseball for the Baltimore Orioles.

He then became a Montclair police officer, and retired in 1985 as a lieutenant after 30 years of service.

Mr. Tait is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean; his four children, Richard Jr. and his wife NancyAnne, Maryellen Fabrizio and her husband Rich, Allen and his wife Patty, and Karen Malleo and her husband Anthony; two sisters, Betty Paulikas, and Helen Downey; and 10 grandchildren, Richard III, Scott, Thomas, Mark, Matthew, Laura, Britton, Jack, Giancarlo, and Sara.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Montclair Volunteer Ambulance Unit, 95 Walnut St., Montclair, NJ 07042, or the Montclair Policemen's Benevolent Association, Local 53, 647 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, NJ 07042.
