William A. Szabo, 87, of Hellertown, died Monday, August 1, 2011 at Moravian Village of Bethlehem.

Born: in Hellertown on April 8, 1924 to the late Martin & Illona Kovacs Szabo.

Personal: He is the husband of Marion S. Schaeffer Szabo.

William served his country honorably during World War II in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific from 1943 1946. He graduated from Hellertown High School in 1942. He received his B.A. in Education from Moravian College in 1952 and his M.A. in Education from Lehigh University in 1958.

He began his career in education in 1952 as a 7th & 8th grade teacher in a one-room school in Blooming Glen - Pennridge School District. He then taught 6th grade at Lehigh Mountain one-room school in Lower Saucon Township School District, followed by the same position at the Seidersville four-room school.

In 1958, he became the first principal of the newly built Lower Saucon Elementary School and remained a principal in the Saucon Valley School District until his retirement in 1986. His career in education spanned 34 years. Bill played and excelled in sports. In high school, Muggsy played varsity soccer, basketball and baseball.

In college, he played varsity basketball and baseball. From 1949-1952, he played professional baseball for the Washington Senators in a Class B Colonial League in Waterbury, CT, playing the position of catcher. Locally, he played basketball for many years with the Steelers and he also coached Little League Baseball.

Later in life, he switched his interest to football and became a fanatic fan of the Penn State Nittany Lions. Bill loved to travel. He and his wife traveled from coast to coast, and to such places as Europe, Nova Scotia, the Florida Keys, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Alaska.

Family was always the center of his life and for the last 13 years he was overjoyed to have his grandchildren with him as part of his daily routine. They gave him immeasurable joy and happiness and showered him with love.

Memberships: Bill was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, Hellertown. Bill served at various times as council member, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, lay reader, usher, and a member of the Eucharistic ministry team. He was a member of the Hellertown American Legion Post 397, the Second Marine Division Association, the Retired Teachers of PA, and he held life memberships in the National Education Association and the PA State Education Association.

Survivors: In addition to his loving wife of 58 years; sons, William Jr., Scott and his wife Sharon; grandchildren, Brett and Brynne Szabo. Predeceased by his brothers: Martin & Julius Sabo and his sister: Helen Sabo.

Services: Family and friends are invited to call 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc. 326 Main Street, Hellertown and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Church. The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, August 5th, 2011 at Christ Lutheran Church, 69 Main Street - Hellertown.

The interment will conclude services with Military Honors at Union Cemetery of Hellertown. The Reverend Philip C. Spohn will officiate at the service.
