Albert Christian Sturni passed away on April 15, 2011 at Wagner Heights Nursing & Rehabilitation

Center. He was 89. Albert was born March 16, 1922 in Staten Island, NY to Albert Joseph Sturni and Mabel Theodora Weigold.

After high school graduation, Al enrolled in the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY, graduated with the Class of 1944, and served on active duty from August 1943 to August 1945 in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean-Middle East War Zones.

Following his military service, he trained to be a professional baseball umpire. After a short stint in minor league umpiring, he pursued a career for which his military engineering training had prepared him, the heating and air conditioning business.

Upon his retirement in 1982 from Frasier Heating he continued working with his wife, Mary Lou, in their rental business until a few weeks ago. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge, an avid golfer, and an original member of the Venetian Gardens Golf Club, running many of their golf tournaments.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, June and Edith. Surviving family include his wife of 44 years, Mary Lou; a son, Gary (Cindy) Sturni of Memphis, TN, grandchildren Rebecca

(David) Patenaude, Pomfret, CT, Peter Sturni of Lake Placid, NY, Clare (James) Wood of Austin, TX; step-son Abraham Steven (Mary) Mackey; grandchildren Nathanael Mackey of Sunnyvale, CA, Matthew, Christopher and Joy Mackey of Stockton, and two great grandchildren.

Interment will be at the San Joaquin National Cemetery, Gustine, CA on April 21, 2011 at 12:30 p.m.

A memorial gathering will be held April 28, 2011, 2:00 p.m. at the Venetian Gardens Community Center, 1555 Mosaic Way in Stockton.
