GASTONIA - Grady Bernell
Stott, 89, died June 25, 2011.
Mr. Stott attended Duke University on a baseball scholarship and played
for a New York Yankees farm affiliate. He was a U.S. Marine during WWII,
achieving the rank of First Lieutenant and then Captain.
After military service he returned to Duke and graduated in 1947. Mr.
Stott practiced law for more than 59 years after graduating Duke Law School
in 1952. Mr. Stott was senior partner of Stott, Hollowell, Palmer &
Windham; Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers; past President and
Member Emeritus of the North Carolina State Bar Association, Chair of
the Grievance Committee, and Chair of the State Board of Legal Specialization;
past member of the North Carolina State Board of Conservation and Development;
former superior court solicitor (now district attorney) of the Mecklenburg-Gaston
district; NC Bar Association General Practice Hall of Fame; and past Presi-dent
of the Gaston County Bar Association.
He never retired from the practice of law and regularly went to his office
up to a week before he passed away, as he was committed to helping those
who needed his wise and compassionate counsel.
Mr. Stott was born in Bailey, N.C. on September 19, 1921.
Survivors are his wife of 59 years, Mays Beal Stott; daughters Caroline
Beal Stott and Sue Stott Ryan (John Ryan); grandchildren John Jenkins,
Amy Jenkins, Laura Gif-fin, Allison Giffin, Genevieve Ryan, and Liam Ryan;
and siblings Evelyn Proctor, Bobby Stott, Melba Smith and Clara Carter.
He is predeceased by his parents, William Willard Stott and Zettie Bissette
Stott, and brother, Henry Stott.
Memorial service is Tuesday, June 28 at 11 a.m., First United Methodist
Church in Gastonia with Rev. Dr. Jim Westmoreland officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life
Center. Interment will be private.
