SUMTER Daniel
Raymond Stokes, age 85, died on Saturday, January 16, 2010, in Tuomey
Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Lucknow, SC, a son of the late Joel Raymond Stokes and
Lurene Johnson Stokes. Mr. Stokes was the former owner of Stokes Sanitary
Supply and a former employee of Gamecock Chemical. As a 20-year-old, he
led the Appalachian League in hitting with a .351 average - his first
year in organized baseball. After playing in Atlanta and Memphis, he returned
to South Carolina to play in the Palmetto League. He was also an avid
hunter and fisherman. His family and friends will sorely miss him.
Surviving are one son, Joel Rand Stokes and his wife, Linda, of Sumter;
a brother, Harry Stokes of Sumter; along with one niece, Sherri Stokes
Grady and her husband, Jim, of Charleston, SC.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at 12:30
p.m. in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Jose Holler officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Charles L. Shaw, Nick Nichols and Steve Creech.
The family will receive friends prior to the service, on Wednesday, January
20, 2010, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church,
9 West Calhoun Street, Sumter, SC, and to the S.P.C.A at 1140 S. Guignard
Drive, Sumter, SC.
