Funeral service will
be at 11 a.m. Friday at Crestwood Chapel for Mr. Homer Stewart, 96, of
Gadsden. Bro. Bill Harbison will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood
Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct the service.
Our precious husband, daddy and Pop took Jesus' hand and entered into
his Heavenly home on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. Homer F. Stewart was born
Aug. 22, 1915, in Stevenson, Ala. Mr. Stewart was a longtime member of
East Gadsden Baptist Church and a former Sunday School teacher. He retired
from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in 1980 with 38 years of service.
He was a legend in local and professional baseball, known for his amazing
knuckleball, pitching for the great Goodyear teams of years ago and the
Gadsden Pilots. He also managed several local softball teams and was an
avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mr. Stewart was a strong Christian family man who enjoyed socializing
with family and friends. He never met a stranger and always shared his
faith. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel and Sarah Arnold Stewart;
four brothers; and one sister.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife of 62 years, Erma Stewart; children,
Jeannine Diggs, Roger K. Stewart and H.F. (Mary) Stewart Jr.; grandchildren,
Charlotte (Hal) Hearn, Brandi (Rick) Pate, Trent (Chere) Stewart, David
(Robin) Diggs and Greg and (Robin) Diggs; 14 great-grandchildren and six
great-great-grandchildren and their families.
Pallbearers will be family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to East Gadsden Baptist Church,
211 Sixth St. NE, Gadsden, AL 35903.
The family will receive friends Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of
service at Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home.
