Jack Michael Stephans, 77, of Williamsburg, passed away on July 22, 2012. The son of Michael Alexander and Rose Stephans, Jack was a loving husband to Elizabeth A. "Betty" Stephans for more than fifty years. For the past thirteen years they resided in Ford's Colony.

Born in New York, NY on the lower east side, Jack moved to the Bronx and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1951. He received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY.

A highly recruited athlete, Mr. Stephans was recruited personally by the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant to play football at the University of Kentucky. Instead he attended the College of the Holy Cross and played football for Hall of Fame football coach, Dr. Eddie Anderson. During the 1955 season he was one of the nation's leading passers.

After graduating from Holy Cross in 1956, he was drafted into the NFL by the Pittsburgh Steelers, as a back-up quarterback to Hall of Famer, Bobbie Layne. He also signed a minor league baseball contract with the Cleveland Indians organization. In 1962, he was employed by Moore Business Forms, Ltd. where he was a top sales executive for 37 years. He retired in 1992 and re-located to Williamsburg in 1999.

Mr. Stephans is survived by his wife, Betty Stephans, owner of the Velvet Shoestring; his five children, Jeffrey M. Stephans, Andrée Stephans-Griggs, Jon C. Stephans, Jacalyn Stephans-Hazeltine, Michael C. Stephans; and ten grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Rd, Williamsburg on Friday, July 27 at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow privately.
