Tony Frank Stathos passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and close friends, on July 8, 2008. He was happily married to Bess for almost 30 years. Tony was born in Sacramento to Aphrodite and Frank Stathos and lived in Sacramento and Elk Grove areas for his entire life. He graduated from McClatchy High School in 1951 and attended Sacramento City College.

Tony had a distinguished career as a left-handed pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals minor league baseball team, as well as being named to the LaSalle Club Baseball Hall of Fame. After his baseball career, he owned and worked in several family businesses. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1955-57.

He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed spending time attending sporting events for his grandchildren and hosting friends at his beloved Rio Linda Lounge.

Survived by his loving wife Bess Stathos, his son Christopher Stathos of Sacramento, his son Gregory Spallas and his wife Kathy of Elk Grove, his son Nicholas Spallas and his wife Angie of Elk Grove, and his daughter Alexandra Payne and her husband Christopher of Mississippi. Grandpa Tony was also devoted to his grandchildren Anthony, Andrew, Christopher, Trent, Matt, Corissa, Sophie, Jack, and Logan. He is also survived by his siblings Gus, Harry and his wife Lana, Nick and his wife Helene, Pete and his wife Jeanne, and Becky and her husband Larry, and was preceded in death by his late brother George. Tony is also survived by many nephews and nieces and his multitude of close friends.

Family and friends are welcome to attend the Trisagion prayer service Sunday, July 13, at 7pm at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 600 Alhambra Blvd., Sacramento 95816. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 14, at 11am at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Lawn Cemetery, 2720 Riverside Blvd. in Sacramento. Family and friends are invited to join the Stathos family for a Meal of Mercy after the burial service at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church hall.
