Clarence Stamper, 89

BEAUFORT -- Clarence Watson "Snook" Stamper, 89, of Beaufort, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Carteret General Hospital. Mr. Stamper was born in Durham, on July 4, 1918 to the late Carl Lemuel and Docia Bennett Stamper.

He was the owner of Stamper's Jewelry and Gift Shop on Front Street in Beaufort.Mr. Stamper was stationed in Beaufort while serving in the Civil Air Patrol from September, 1942 until August, 1943. He served as a guard, serviceman, and mechanic with Sergeants rank.

He played as a Centerfielder for the Erwin Red Birds
and the Dunn-Erwin Twins in the North Carolina Tobacco State League. He later signed and played for the Kinston Eagles of the Coastal Plain League.

His beloved wife of 54 years, Mary Elizabeth Oldham Stamper, predeceased him.

His funeral will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Ann Street United Methodist church. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at Carteret Memorial Gardens.
