Bernie served on the So. St. Paul School Board, and was a member of the boards of District Energy St. Paul and the Building Owners and Managers Association. He retired after 35 years with Gillette and then began a new chapter of his life in 1984 as a volunteer serving as the first President of the newly-established South St. Paul Educational Foundation, which, as a result of the commitment of Bernie and many others, has given over $3,100,000 in academic scholarships to over 2,100 graduating seniors from So. St. Paul High School since the Foundation's inception.

Bernie will be remembered for the role he played in building the Foundation and for the difference he has made in the lives of many students who were able to go on to get a post-high school education.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of Allina Hospice, as well as many family members and family friend Cookie Funk Unger who provided care to Bernie in the last months of Bernie's life.

Bernie was blessed with a sharp mind, quick wit, and positive attitude filled with dignity which he demonstrated up through the last day of his life.
