CONOVER -- Mr. Spears, 79, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. He was born April 12, 1930, in Cheraw, SC to the late Jasper L. Spears, Sr. and Juanita Laviner Spears.

His mom, dad and brother, Bobby, called him Jasper. He grew up in Cheraw where they nurtured his passion for family and he found his passion for baseball. His teammates called him JL. He enjoyed a successful baseball career with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization for eleven years.

His friends and colleagues called him Jack.

He worked in the textile industry for 40 years and concluded his career with Quaker Fabrics. His grandchildren called him Grandy. To be in the presence of his grandchildren was his greatest joy. Because of his devotion and unconditional love he will always be known to his children as 'Daddy'.

He is survived by his daughter, Kelley Spears Jarrett and husband Dale, of Hickory; sons, William Kent Spears and wife Amelia, of Statesville, Kevin Lee Spears and wife Dawn, of Claremont, and Kacey Neil Spears and wife Amy, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Natalee Jarrett, Karsyn Jarrett, Zachary Jarrett, Will Spears, Lily Spears, Jackson Spears and Brighton Spears; and brother, Bobby Spears of Cheraw, SC.

There will be a reception at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 in the fellowship hall at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hickory, NC. Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sipe's Orchard Home, 4431 County Home Road, Conover, NC 28613, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 547 6th St., NW, Hickory, NC 28601 and Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658.
