George W. Spears

Mr. Spears, a resident of Opelousas, died on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at his residence.
George served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He played in the Evangeline Baseball League and also minor league baseball for the New York Yankees. After his baseball career, he opened and operated Spears Construction. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his son, George W. "Billy" Spears, Jr. of Opelousas, La.; his daughter, Beverly S. Brown and husband, Bob, of Broussard, La.; sisters, Lucy Shea of Lake Charles, LA and Genevieve Dosher of Ragley, LA his granddaughter, Kathy Phillips Long and husband, Todd, and 2 great-granddaughters, Meredith and Marissa Long all of Gonzales, LA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Blanche Spears; parents, Fred and Emily Abshire Spears; brother, Dave Spears and a sister, Ruby Martorano.
Visiting hours were observed in the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas, on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m.
