John Wesley Snyder was born in Pottstown, PA. He was the son of Harold and Bertha Snyder. Harold died when John was five years old. He attended Girard College for Fatherless Boys in Pennsylvania through the tenth grade.

When John was 16, he returned home and attended Pottstown High School, where he was an excellent athlete. His goal at the time was to play professional baseball.

He was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a catcher. His career was cut short due to an injury, after which he enlisted in the Navy in January 1951 and was stationed on the USS Buck in San Diego.

In December of 1951, he married Janet LaMar Waters of Pottstown. John was honorably discharged in October 1954 after serving in the Korean War.

In 1955, John and Janet returned to California and made their home in the San Diego area. In October 1958, their only child, Mark Don Snyder, was born. John took pride in coaching and watching his son develop into an outstanding athlete.

The Snyders lived in Chula Vista and John was employed at Rohr Industries for 32 years. In 1993, John retired. He enjoyed his retirement traveling, staying in touch with friends, going to breakfast and greeting his longtime buddies.

He loved many things, especially Michele's lasagna. John (Dad) had a very close relationship with his son, daughter-in-law and grandsons. He was a well loved man who had many friends and will always be remembered for his bigger than life presence and sense of humor.

John passed away suddenly on Thursday morning, March 12, 2009. He is survived by his wife Janet, son Mark and his wife Michele, grandsons, Matthew and Christopher, sister Joanne Young, and numerous nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania.

Services will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Community Mortuary, 855 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA.

Burial and luncheon reception will follow at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the American Heart Association, 9404 Genesee Avenue #240, La Jolla, CA 92037.
