Virginia Beach - Josephus "Joe" Smith passed away on August 24, 2012 in Virginia Beach, Va.

Joe was a resident of Virginia Beach for more than 57 years. Joe graduated from Alexander Park High School where he excelled in baseball and football. A sports scholarship took him to Virginia Tech for a short while until the Army drafted him. He played ball for the Army at Fort Belvoir and gained recognition for his skill in pitching. After his service in the Army, he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and played AAA ball for them.

Joe was also an active member of Bayside Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, where he also served as an Elder. He was a member of Bayside Masonic Lodge #218 for more than 50 years and long-time member of Bayside Hunt Club. He loved wildlife and was a member of the local wildlife federation. He was also a charter member of the Corolla Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Elizabeth Smith; his parents Lucy Loreen Ballantine Smith and Charles Patrick Smith; two brothers, Cuthbert Paxton Smith and Charles W. B. Smith; and a sister Rosalind Joyce Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Huff Smith, and his son Josephus D. "Danny" Smith, Jr. and his wife Donna H. Smith, Chesapeake, Va.; two brothers, Haynes C. Smith (Frances), Knoxville, Tenn. and Hugh F. Smith (Vivian), Williamston, N.C.; four sisters, Juanita S. Downs, Catonsville, M.D., Lucy S. Price (Ronald), Reidsville, N.C., Judy S. Liles (David) and Flora A. Smith, both of Chesapeake; and numerous neices and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Bayside

Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. Monday, August 27.
