James J. Smith, fortified with the sacraments of the Holy Mother Church, passed away on July 2, 2012. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean War, a former player for the St. Louis Browns, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the American Legion.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Louise, nee Carr, Smith and a sister, Margaret Erbschloe.

Surviving is his wife of over 50 years, LaVerne Smith, nee Persov, four children; Cynthia (Wesley Jr.) Berg, Theresa (Shane) Trafton, James Smith II, and Katherine (Scott) Hanneken, eight grandchildren, Christopher (Amanda) Noeth, Jennifer (Lonnie Adams) Ehlmann, Nicole Trafton, Adam Trafton, Scott Trafton, Joshua Hanneken, Paige Hanneken, and Addison Hanneken, two great grandchildren, Sylar and Bryston Adams, other relatives and friends.

Services: Friends may call from 2-7 pm, Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at Hoffmeister South County Chapel, 1515 Lemay Ferry Rd.. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Thursday, July 5, 2012 at St. Matthias Catholic Church.

Interment will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
