WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Robert W. "Bob" Smedley, 76, of 607 Chicory Spring Court, died of emphysema on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Quincy (Pa.) Village.
Born March 18, 1932, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Richard J. and Ida M. Talhelm Smedley.
He was a 1949 graduate of Waynesboro High School.
He worked for 24 years at the former Arthur's Dairy in Waynesboro, as a milk processor.
He was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren.
He had pitched Class A baseball for the Washington Senators in North Carolina and West Virginia. He had pitched for local baseball teams including, Junior American Legion, Way-Latco Club, Pond Bank, Pa., Marion, Pa., New Franklin, Pa., Fayetteville, Pa., Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., and Smithsburg.
He bowled on Arthur's Dairy Team and played softball for local and Church of the Brethren teams. He also coached the former Wiles Little League Team.
He was a member of the National AARP and South Chapter 2977 AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Janet L. Potter Smedley, whom he married Sept. 3, 1954; three daughters, Robin L. Calimer of Wallace, N.C., and Joy A. Shatzer and Susan C. Smedley, both of Waynesboro; one son, Robert W. Smedley of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Richard D. Smedley of Chambersburg, Pa.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Wiles and Mary Smedley.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home in Waynesboro. The Rev. C. Albert Guyer will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.
There will be no public viewing; however, the family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
