PINEVILLE - Donald
J. Sides, 82, passed away Dec. 10, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center,
Don was born and raised in the small town of Dora, Alabama, to the late
Walter & Viola Sides on November 5, 1930. "Sonny", as he
was called by friends and family, was the oldest of six children.
After attending Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN, he joined
the US Air Force traveling and playing baseball for the Keesler Air Force
team. During this time, he earned the nickname "Stretch Sides"
by the local media.
Upon leaving the air force he received offers to play baseball for several
major league teams, the Red Sox & the Pittsburgh Pirates among them.
Don chose the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Sports were always important to him and in later years golf was his passion,
rarely missing the weekly game of golf with his buddies.
Don retired after thirty plus years of service as a Southern Bell network
He is survived by two brothers. Jimmy and Wayne Sides, three daughters,
Kathy Lazarides, Donna Graham and husband Sam, Beth Barnes and husband
Pat, his former wife and now dear friend, Ernestine Ferrell, and three
grandchildren, Daniel Graham, Kyle and Colton Barnes and several nieces
A memorial to celebrate Don's life will be held in the chapel of Matthews
Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 17th, with Rev. Emily
