Ernest Sherrill

Ernest Lester Sherrill, 75, of Troutman, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008. He was born on July 30, 1932, in Iredell County, to the late Thomas Osborne and Margaret Estell Stinson Sherrill.

Mr. Sherrill was a graduate of Troutman High School, and had retired after 37 years as a shipping and receiving clerk for the J.C. Penney Distribution Center. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957.

Mr. Sherrill played professional baseball for the Mooresville Moors in 1952 and the U.S. Air Force. He was a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, youth training union director, R.A. director and counselor, brotherhood director and choir member, and a member of the men's associational choir.

He served on many church leadership committees for a number of years at Bethel Baptist Church, of which he was a lifelong member. Mr. Sherrill was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and was married 54 years to Shirley Eades Sherrill.

He is survived by two daughters, Teressa S. Hopkins (Benny) of Kill Devil Hills, and Alaina S. Wells (Ricky) of Statesville; four grandchildren, Jordan Hopkins and Aaron Hopkins of Kill Devil Hills, Kelsey and Karley Wells of Statesville; a great-grandchild, Madison M. Hopkins of Kill Devil Hills; and a sister, Salida S Howard (John) of Union Grove.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sherrill was preceded in death by four sisters, Violet Sherrill, Pauline Collins, Mildred Ware and Hazel Strickland; and five brothers, Thomas Hunter, Otis, Samuel, Otha and Thomas Eugene Sherrill.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. tonight at Troutman Funeral Home. Funeral services celebrating the life of Ernest Lester Sherrill will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joe Woodward officiating.

Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1162 E. Monbo Road, Statesville, NC 28677.
