Dean LaRue Sheatz, 76, of Seneca, died at 8:25 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at UPMC Northwest in Seneca, after a courageous two year battle with acute myeloid leukemia.
Born June 13, 1935 in Van, he was the son of the late Willard "Babe" R. Sheatz and Ruth Clark Sheatz.
He was a 1953 graduate of Cranberry High School where he lettered in basketball and baseball.
He was an outstanding athlete who was scouted by major league baseball teams. He signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1953.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 until 1960, assigned to Special Services, where he represented the United States in Korea playing basketball, baseball and volleyball. He was involved in sports locally, playing for the Seneca Hay Rake baseball team and the Franklin YMCA. He enjoyed bowling, especially duck pin bowling with his sons. He also helped to coach his sons' little league and legion ball teams. He was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was fond of dirt track racing, and was a member of the 7W racing crew.
Dean was an avid hunter who enjoyed camping, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. He was a lifelong member of the Franklin Elks B.P.O.E., and a past member of the Venango Barbertones.
He was employed briefly by National Fuel Gas, spent 24 years at Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company, worked for Venango Training Center, and later retired from United Community Independence Programs. Dean was a very talented carpenter, maintaining and renovating his own home in addition to UCIP group homes in Clarion, Venango and Crawford counties.
He was married on October 25, 1963 to the former Carol A. Shaffer, who survives. They celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary in October.
He is also survived by two sons, Bradley Dean Sheatz of Seneca, Chad Robert Sheatz and Jenny Horn of Oil City; a daughter, Lisa Sheatz Straub and husband John of Pleasantville; and six grandchildren, Kelsi and Sydney Straub of Pleasantvile, and Brooke Sheatz, Connor Dean Sheatz, Adalyn Renee Sheatz, and Elizabeth Horn, all of Oil City.
Also surviving are a brother, Willard Clark "Bugs" Sheatz and wife Jean, a sister-in-law, Louise Sheatz, his mother-in-law, Pauline O'Neil Shaffer, all of Cranberry, and a sister-in-law, Nancy Shaffer Schiffer and husband Gene of Erie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marion Sheatz Huston and her husband Jite Huston, a brother, Wayne R. Sheatz, and his father-in-law, Shurl S. Shaffer.
Friends will be received Friday (Nov. 18th) from 1-3 and 7-9 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, Inc., 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township. Funeral services will be held from the funeral home Saturday (Nov. 19th) at 11 a.m. with Rev. Clara Kohlmeyer officiating.
Interment will follow in Brandon Cemetery, Cranberry.
