William J. Shannon

LANSDALE — William J. Shannon, 83, of Lansdale, formerly of Locust Gap, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in his home.

Born in Locust Gap, he was a son of the late William Joseph and Bridget (Flannery) Shannon.

He graduated from Mount Carmel Township High School in 1943.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was stationed on the USS Vicksburg. He was in the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima.

He and his wife, Elizabeth "Bette" (McGee) Shannon, had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in February.

Following his discharge from the service, he played professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals as a pitcher in their minor league system for four years. He also played semi-pro basketball for the Locust Gap Apollos through the 1950s.

Mr. Shannon retired after 24 years of employment with B.F. Goodrich in Oaks.

He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, Lansdale.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel J. and Pamela Shannon, of North Wales, Robert D. and Karen Shannon, of Pottsville and William and Michele Shannon, of Warminster; a daughter and son-in-law, Nora L. and Gregory Clayton, of Lansdale; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kitty Wassel, of Mount Carmel.
