John E. Schmidt, 76, of Millstadt, Ill., formerly of Belleville, Ill., born July 28, 1933, in Belleville, Ill., died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, Ill.

Mr. Schmidt was a retired contractor and carpenter for Carpenters Local 433. He was also a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill. As everyone knows, John loved his sports, especially baseball. He had many friends through his baseball memorabilia and was very active with the Belleville American Legion Baseball program for almost 20 years. John was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John A. and Ida, nee Kling, Schmidt; three brothers, Paul J. Schmidt, Raymond (Madelyn) Schmidt, and James (Faye) Schmidt; three sisters, Rita Bien, Mary (Milton) Clement, and Catherine (Jerry) Mazzarino.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mary, nee Prindable, Schmidt, whom he married May 23, 1959; two sons, Jeffrey (Mitzi) Schmidt of Belleville, Ill., and Wayne (Maggie) Schmidt of Millstadt, Ill.; two daughters, Vicki (Craig) Reynolds of Ocala, Fla., and Beth Hausmann of Columbia, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, Christopher, Jonathan, and Stephanie Schmidt, Justin and Austin Schmidt, Heather, Jacob, and John Reynolds, and Lauren, Claire, and Jordan Hausmann; three sisters, Dorothy Schmidt and Pauline (Alvin) Bietsch, both of Belleville, Ill., and Martha A. Campbell of Swansea, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Nick) Lang of Belleville, Ill., Rose Hall of Belleville, Ill., Kathy Lange of Chicago, Ill., Doris (Guy) Givan of Ohio, Dorothy and Claire Prindable, and Minta Schmidt, all of Belleville, Ill., and brothers-in-law, Gordon Bien of Belleville, Ill., John (Louise) Prindable of St. Louis, Mo., Patrick (Mary) Prindable of O'Fallon, Ill., and Tom (Judy) Prindable of Chicago, Ill.

He will be deeply missed by numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends with whom he shared his life.

Visitation: Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill.

Funeral: A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Bishop Stanley Schlarman officiating. According to Mr. Schmidt's wishes, his body was donated to the Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
