Donald E. Schmidt of McNaughton formerly of the Watertown area passed away on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Donald was born Oct. 6, 1926, in Brookfield, to Edwin and Marie Schmidt. Don attended Wauwatosa High School and from there he went to Vero Beach, Fla., for spring training. Don was a pitcher and played on the minor league teams of the then Brooklyn Dodgers. He traveled throughout the eastern, southern and midwestern states.

He married Betty Jane Miller on the evening of July 1, 1947, at Tourist Park on the pitchers mound in Asheville, N.C. They were married for 63 years.

Don was a longtime farmer and carpenter in the Watertown/Ixonia area. He played baseball with Lannon, Lebanon, and Watertown. He then managed the Ixonia and Watertown Cardinals baseball teams. He was also a baseball scout for the Minnesota Twins. Don retired from his baseball career in 1970.

He was a great lover of music and taught himself to play several instruments. Don and his wife moved to McNaughton in 1989. He loved the northwoods enjoying fishing, snowmobiling and woodworking.

Don is survived by his wife Betty Jane; three children, Steven (Jill) Schmidt of Sherborn, England, Linda (Jonathan) Blank of Watertown, John (Juliene) Schmidt of Jefferson. Eight grandchildren, Amanda (Brady) Bushman, Marisa (Jeff) Pirkel, Megan (Mike) Schauer, Amy Schmidt, Christopher Schmidt, Jordan and Janelee Schmidt, Alexander Schmidt; great grandchildren, Karsen Bushman and Nolan Schauer. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, a sister, sister in-laws and brother in-laws. Don will be truly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services for Don will be held on Friday, March 4, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Carlson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12 noon until just prior to the services at the Carlson Funeral Home on Friday, March 4, 2011. Interment will be in the Newbold Cemetery.
