WILMINGTON - Donald Edward Schenk, 79, of Wilmington, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 4, 1933, in Rowan County to the late Raymond Schenk and Mary Graham Schenk. Donald was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.

He played Minor League Baseball with the Boston Red Sox and was a volunteer coach with the Carolina Beach Dixie Youth League. After retiring from Gregory Poole Equipment Co., he worked with Fry Landscaping for 11 years. Donald was also a member of the American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Marie Bailey; and brothers Arnold, Elmer, Daniel and Clyde Schenk.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Sally Marie Livengood Schenk; daughter Sandra Schenk Matthews and husband Cliff of Wilmington; grandchildren Amy Wilkie, Cliff W. Matthews Jr., Donald Matthews, Jonathan Bailey, Heather Bailey and Amber DeRidder; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers Wilbert, Gilbert, Cecil and Norman Schenk; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington, NC.

Graveside: A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Greenlawn Memorial park.
