Mr. Satterfield was born August 3, 1923 in Atlanta to Betty Sue Holton Satterfield and Marion Homer Satterfield. He graduated from Jordan High School (Columbus, GA) class of 1942, after which he signed a professional baseball contract.

On Christmas Day of 1942, he married his high school sweetheart, Jackie Allen. In 1943, he and his twin brother, Ray, joined the Army Air Corps.

After his discharge from service, he continued his baseball career. Over seven seasons, he hit for a .298 average with 24 homers and 35 triples. He retired from baseball in 1948.

In 1954, Mr. Satterfield moved his family to Albany from Columbus to work for Gerber Baby Food.

After his family, his true love remained baseball. He coached several generations of boys at Eighth Street Park. He umpired high school and college level baseball before coaching Post 30 Baseball in the 1980’s.

In the mid 1970’s, the city of Albany named the former Eleventh Street Ball Park to Satterfield Park in honor of Ralph and in memory of Ray.

In 1997, he was inducted into the Albany Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Satterfield was an avid golfer and played until he was 84 years old. Ralph made friends where ever he went and always had a joke to tell.
