Donald Sassaman, 91, formerly of Newton Falls, Ohio, and Titusville, Fla., died Aug. 10 at Chapel Hill Retirement Center, Canal Fulton, Ohio.
He was born in Tamaqua on Dec. 27, 1916.
He was the husband of the late Eleanor Blickley Sassaman and one of eight children of the late Clarence and Maude Gouldner Sassaman.
Don first worked at the Ravena Arsenal and later worked and retired from the Warren Republic Steel Company in 1978. He and his wife moved to Florida in the early 1980s.
Donald, nicknamed "Porky," loved to fish and bowl.
He was a pitcher for the Allentown Minor League Baseball Team and also pitched for the Ravena Arsenal Baseball Team.
Surviving are a son, Robert "Bob" Sassaman, Canal Fulton; sisters, M. Louise Smith, Tamaqua, and Kathryn Van Reed, Harrisburg.
He will be cremated and his remains will be buried next to his beloved wife, Eleanor, at Oakland Cemetery, Titusville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chapel Hill Retirement Center, Alzheimer's Association or Timken Mercy Hospice. Paquelet Funeral Home, Massillon, Ohio, was in charge of arrangements.
