MANSFIELD-James "STRETCH" R. Regula, 83, of Mansfield passed away October 19, 2011 at Kindred Health Care.

James was born June 14, 1928 in Toledo to John and Leota Wiles Regula. As a child he excelled in basketball and baseball and was a 1946 graduate of Mansfield Senior High. Stretch was one of the "Baseball Renaissance Men", from the 1945 district champion team that brought baseball back to Senior High. Stretch was 3-1 with a 1.04 ERA as a pitcher and also lead the team in hitting with a .466 average. He received a number of varsity letters in basketball and baseball.

James attended Murray State College on a basketball scholarship and was drafted to play for the Chicago Cubs farm team as the pitcher after returning from college. After he played for the Cubs, he was considered Pro and had to wait 2 years for an exemption, before he could pursue his passion and play in state tournaments. He started working at Gorman Rupp, still playing in and winning many local and state baseball tournaments as a pitcher. James earned his certification in accounting and was employed at Mansfield Tire & Pennsylvania Tire as an accountant for 28 years, and was the "Last Man Out of the Door" before they closed.

Stretch had a great disposition and his whit and humor were enjoyed by all who knew him. He loved to grill for family and friends and was known as the "Grill King" and loved family cookouts. He spent special times with his nieces and nephews, trips to the beach, walks with all his family pets, and most recently with his dog Milly. Stretch enjoyed watching people and birds but his true passion in later years was his love of golf, which he shared with his wife. He started playing golf with Mansfield Tire and the AmVets, was a member of Pebble Creek for many years and had too many golf buddies to mention. Stretch loved home projects, completing his never-ending "Honey-Do List", his John Deer tractor and an Ice Cold Beer. He was enlisted in the National Guard in 1948 and had an Honorable discharge in 1952.

He was a devoted husband, brother in-law, uncle and great uncle who created many treasured memories for his wife and family and will be sadly missed by all.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years Eleanor "Stevie" Regula; brother in-law and best friend James L. Smith; special sister in-law Suzanne Stevens; nieces and nephews, Linda, Don, and Sharon Stevens, Gabrielle Diehm, Chief Master Sergeant Robert G. (Heather) Smith, Shawn Velp and Robin Zimmerman; great nieces and nephews Shelbi and Corey Diehm, Clay and Jacob Smith, and Shawn Voelp and Robin Zimmerman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Robert Regula; a niece Bobbi Ann Regula; and an aunt Martha Perkins.

Friends may call at Herlihy-Chambers Funeral Home, 173 Park Avenue West, on Wednesday from 10 am - 12 pm. A Memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm with Deacon Terry Philpott officiating. Burial will be held in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery at a later time.
