James W. Pierce, 87, of Westport, died Saturday, August 6, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was husband of Virginia R. (Crapo) Pierce, they were married for 65 years.

A lifelong resident of Westport, he was son of the late Charles A. and Ann (Cummings) Pierce. He was a graduate of Westport High School Class of 1942 and was inducted into the W.H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.

A veteran of WWII, he served his country in the United States Coast Guard.

After playing professional baseball, Mr. Pierce later became a self-employed fisherman. Mr. Pierce was a member of the Head of Westport Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed farming and fishing.

Including his wife, survivors include a grandson: George W. Pierce of Westport; 4 great-granddaughters: Kyra and her husband Sam, Haley, Ashley and Brooke; a great-great-grandson: Ari; and several nieces and nephews.

He was father of the late James W. "Sandy" Pierce, Jr. and brother of the late William C. Pierce.
