(VALLEY) Carey Worth Philpott, 80, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at his home of natural causes.
Services will be Saturday, June 20, at 2 p.m. EDT at Fairfax First Baptist Church. The Rev. Steve Garnett will officiate.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Fairfax.
He is survived by his wife, Nellene Knight Philpott; his children, Larry Philpott of Valley, Gary Philpott of Newnan, Ga., and Amelia Yates of Valley; his stepchildren, Steven Russell of Brookhaven, Miss., and Lori Salyer of Brookhaven; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Philpott was cared for by Lonzie Tremble, Bernadine Manning and Fay Spears. Mr. Philpott is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gordon and Eugene; and his former wife, Kathleen Clark Philpott.
Mr. Philpott was born Aug. 20, 1928, in Roanoke to Thomas Walker and Annie Mae Philpott. He graduated from Handley High School and then later received three degrees in education from Auburn University. An educators for 28 years, Mr. Philpott served as principal of Fairfax Elementary School for 20 years. Mr. Philpott played semi-professional baseball for the Valley Rebels and the Florida/Alabama League. As a member of the U.S. Army, Mr. Philpott served his country during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Fairfax First Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that a donation be placed in Mr. Philpott's name to either Fairfax First Baptist's piano fund or Fairfax Elementary School.
