TOWNSHIP, PA - Leroy C. Phelps, 80, died Sunday at his home. Born in Trenton
and formerly of Hopewell Township and Brigantine, he had been a Lower
Makefield resident for the past nine years.
Mr. Phelps was retired from General Motors in Ewing Township where he
was a safety supervisor.
A World War II veteran, he served in both the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S.
Army. He was graduated from Trenton High School, Class of 1944 and attended
Rider College.
Upon returning from the war, Mr. Phelps played professional baseball for
the New York (now San Francisco) Giants organization, pitching at the
Triple A level. An all around athlete, he also was a New Jersey ranked
tennis player and tennis pro at the Mercer County Tennis Center.
He was devoted to his wife, daughters and especially to his grandsons.
He loved the beach and ocean and was an avid football fan of the NY Giants.
Husband of the late Harriet A. Phelps, his beloved wife of 53 years, he
is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Pamela P. Bernath of Lower
Makefield, PA and Barbara P. and Gary Fedeli of Lower Makefield, PA, and
three grandsons, Evan and Tyler Fedeli, and Sawyer Bernath.
A private family service will be held on the beach in Brigantine. Memorial
contributions may be made to Chandler Hall Hospice, 99 Barclay St., Newtown,
PA 18940.
Arrangements are under the direction of the FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral
Home, Ardley, PA.
