GASTONIA - Vernon Ray Petty, 88, passed away Aug. 22, 2012, at his home, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Spencer Mountain and was the son of the late Felder Andrew and Julia Flowers Petty.

Mr. Petty was a graduate of Lowell High School, played professional baseball for the Atlanta Crackers and then served in the U. S. Army during WWII, where he received a Purple Heart. At the end of WWII, he again played professional baseball for the Milwaukee Braves. He retired from Reynolds & Reynolds Company, Gastonia and after retirement worked in the Pro Shop at Gastonia Municipal Golf Course. He was a member of Community Bap-tist Church, Dallas.

Mr. Petty is survived by one daughter, Keila Harris of Gastonia; two grandchildren, Michael Harris and wife Kellie, Shane Harris of Gastonia; four great grandchildren, Jesse, Dylan, Kevin, Christian Harris; one brother, Gerald Petty and wife Betty of Lowell; two sisters, Vivian Fraley of Lowell, Joyce Brown and husband Fred of Spencer Mountain.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Correll and Matt Seagle officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church.

Interment will be private and at a later date.

Mr. Petty was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris Marie Brown Petty; four brothers, Ted Petty, Frank Petty, Paul Petty, Bill Petty; four sisters, Shirley Biddy, Juanita Payne Flint, Essie McAbee and Dorothy Hollis.

National Cremation Service, Charlotte is serving the Petty family.
