DEFIANCE -- Robert A. Penny, 83, of Defiance, died Saturday (June 26, 2010) at Defiance Regional Hospital.

He was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Detroit, Mich., son of Paul and Edith (Baldwin) Penny.

On Dec. 30, 1985, he married Maxine Bosse, who survives.

Mr. Penny was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 3360.

He had a significant career as a pitcher in the Boston Red Sox Farm System, coached many baseball and softball teams, and co-founded the Old Timers Football League.

He worked in maintenance at General Motors, and was an avid supporter of Defiance High School sports.

He is survived by two sons, Brett Penny and Brian Penny; two daughters, LeAnn Hall and Theresa Penny (Jeremiah) Vigansky; five stepsons, Pete Freund, Paul (Velda) Freund, Phil (Jill) Freund, Brian (Shannon) Hannon and John (Kim) Hannon;; two stepdaughters, Andrea (Garry) Rodenberger and Deb Girlie; 16 grandchildren whom he loved dearly and who affectionately referred to him as "BobBob."

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, where services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Revs. John Wilbur and Curtis Bauske officiating.

Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Defiance, with military graveside rites being conducted by VFW Post 3360.
