Luke C. Owens Jr., a retired attorney, died Wednesday in his Grand Island home after a lengthy illness. He was 87.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Owens was a batboy for the Buffalo Bisons and graduated from Fosdick- Masten Park High School. He played minor league baseball for Jamestown, Pittsfield, Mass., Quebec, Lockport and Batavia, before his career was cut short by World War II, when he served as a Seabee.

After the war, Mr. Owens earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Canisius College, then went on to get his law degree at the University of Buffalo.

Mr. Owens had a long legal career that spanned some 50 years. He was a partner in the firm Benzel, Handel, Fink and Owens. During his career, he also was an assistant county attorney and legal secretary to a State Supreme Court justice.

Mr. Owens was a former clerk for the Board of Supervisors. He was a member of the Allentown Village Society, Optimist Club and the Grand Island Republican Committee.

His wife of 46 years, Elizabeth Neff Owens, died in 2001.

Mr. Owens is survived by a daughter, Debora Michaux, and a brother, Alfred.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a. m. Saturday in St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island.
