James E. Owens, 63, of Barnesville, passed away suddenly Thursday evening at St. Luke's Medical Center, Coaldale.

Born in Mahanoy City, Feb. 4, 1948, he was a son of the late William and Jane Kirchner Owens.

He was a 1965 graduate of Mahanoy Area High School, where he was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball and baseball.

He was a 1970 graduate of Penn State University, where he played Division I baseball for three years. He also played in the Detroit Tigers Farm System.

He retired after 34 years as a physical education teacher in the Mahanoy Area School District, where he coached football and baseball.

He served in the Army Reserves.

He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed remodeling homes and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was a member of First United Church of Christ, Delano, where he served as president of the church council. He was also a member of the Mahanoy Area Golf League, TPA, PSEA and NEA.

Surviving are his wife, Karen Collins Owen; a daughter, Allison and her husband, Thomas Freil, Delano; a son, Christopher, Barnesville; grandsons, Hunter and Logan Freil; a brother, William "Rocky" Owens and his wife, Donna, Ashland; two sisters, Nancy and her husband, the Rev. David Eisenhuth, Huntington Valley, Md., and Carol and her husband, Joseph Stofko, Barnesville; an uncle, Evan Owens and his wife, Peggy, Mahanoy City; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Collins, Delano; a brother-in-law, Ted Collins, Barnesville; nieces and nephews.

Also, he was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Denise Collins.

Friends are invited to attend his funeral service at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lamar Christ Funeral Home, Hometown, with the Rev. Janet Kline and the Rev. David Eisenhuth officiating. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private in Sky-View Memorial Park, Hometown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Church of Christ. James P. Haughney Funeral Home, Mahanoy City, is in charge of arrangements.
