L. Nichols, Sr. 79, of Evansville passed away Thursday March 14, 2013
at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Jim graduated from Memorial High School in 1951 and attended the Evansville
College on a football scholarship where he also played baseball. He played
professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox
organizations. Jim was a pitching instructor at Gemini Sports where he
touched many lives. He was very active with his children’s sports,
never missing a practice or a game while they went to Harrison. Jim was
very active in youth baseball in Newburgh and an American Legion coach
for several years where he was known as “Gramps”. He was a
member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Helen Nichols;
son, Mark Albert Nichols, Sr.; brother, Joseph Nichols; great grandchild,
Dustin Sellner and his faithful companion who could do no wrong, Lucky.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann (Folz) Nichols; sons,
Michael Nichols (Carol) of Newburgh, Maury Nichols (Patty) of Evansville;
daughter, Kathleen Nichols of Evansville; sons, John Nichols (Doris) of
Newburgh and James Nichols, Jr. (Andrea) of Boonville; daughter-in-law,
Dawn Nichols; grandchildren, Leslie Hagedorn, Sara Burns, Amanda Sellner,
Jamie Everly, Chrissy, Jason, Mark Jr., Brad, Matthew, Daniel, Tyler and
Andrew Nichols; step grandchildren, Christopher Deffendoll, Andrea McCormick
and Lori Teter; 5 great grandchildren, Caleb Nichols, Aidan Brand, Trae
Nichols, Jaxson Sellner and Waylon Hagedorn and 6 step great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2:00 – 8:00 pm Sunday March 17, 2013 at
Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville, IN 47714
with a Rosary service at 7:00 pm.
Visitation will continue from 9:30 – 10:00 am Monday at Holy Rosary
Catholic Church, 1303 S. Green River Rd., Evansville, IN 47714.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am Monday March 18, 2013 at
the church with Fr. Jeff Read officiating.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
