Gary Mackie Newton, 77 of Sam Rayburn, died on September 30, 2011 at his home. A lakeside memorial service was held on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, with family and friends.

A native of Abilene, Texas he resided at Sam Rayburn for the past 15 years. He was a 1953 graduate of Abilene High School where he was an Allstate baseball player. He attended Texas Christian University on a baseball scholarship and left to play for the Baltimore Orioles from 1955-1957. In 1958, he returned to Abilene Christian College to obtain a Bachelors degree and then advanced to obtain his Master’s of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Texas Tech. He then moved to Houston to join the University of Texas Medical Center as Director of Recovery for Dr. DeBakey’s Heart and Lung Transplant team. A founding member of Texas Physical Therapy Association, he continued as a private practice Physical Therapist until his retirement to Rayburn Country where he continued his lifelong passion for fishing the lakes of Southeast Texas.

Mackie is survived by sons Mike Newton and wife Janet of Round Rock, Texas and Mark Newton and wife Holly of Dallas, Texas; daughter Melinda Newton and husband Sunny Cheng of San Francisco, California. He is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family and friends.
